Kyoto University and a Japanese company have teamed up to create what they believe will be the first wood-based satellites in history by 2023. Sumitomo Forestry said it has begun research into tree growth and the use of wood materials in space. The collaboration will begin experimenting with various types of wood in Earth's extreme environments. As more spacecraft and satellites are launched, experts warn that the threat of space junk crashing with Earth expands. According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), there are nearly 6,000 satellites in orbit around Earth. Approximately 60% of them are obsolete (space junk). Euroconsult estimates that 990 satellites will be launched each year this decade, bringing the total number of satellites in orbit to 15,000 by 2028. Space junk travels at more than 22,300 mph and can cause significant damage to any objects it collides with. In 2006, a tiny piece of space junk collided with the International Space Station, chipping the heavily reinforced window.
