The laser retroreflector array (LRA) is intended to use reflected laser light from an orbiting spacecraft laser (typically a laser altimeter or light detection and ranging - lidar) to precisely determine the lander's location as a fiducial marker, as well as the distance to that point on the lunar surface from the orbiter. Any light that strikes the retroreflectors is directly reflected to the source. A lidar system or an orbiting laser altimeter can track them from several hundred kilometres away. In addition, well-known space technology, laser retroreflectors are typically used to pinpoint a satellite's exact orbit around the earth. Its precise distance can be determined by timing the laser pulses' flight from earth to the satellite and back. This method works similarly to radio-based ranging but with much higher accuracy due to the short wavelength of light. Furthermore, retroreflectors can be used in a variety of scientific and exploration applications, and they have been used on the Moon since the Apollo era. The suitcase-sized retroreflectors showed that the Moon is separating from Earth at a rate of 1.5 inches per year by reflecting light back to Earth. Compared to their larger predecessors, this new generation of tiny retroreflectors has even more applications. They serve as precise markers on the International Space Station to facilitate autonomous docking of cargo-delivery spacecraft.
