A number of projects from Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) member firms demonstrate how the ICT and electronics sector may assist realise a number of human rights and contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By providing solutions that, for instance, enable remote access to learning, mobile banking, and real-time information that can be crucial in emergency situations, including identifying the early onset of drought and enabling the mobilisation of response efforts before a situation reaches a crisis point, the sector can create positive human rights impacts.

The manufacturing of electronic products with short lifespans and supply chains plagued by issues with occupational safety and health as well as other negative labor-related effects, such as "an unsustainable cycle of low wages, human rights abuse, use of hazardous materials, and ineffective and unsustainable recycling practises," have drawn increasing criticism over the last ten years. Furthermore, it has been established that some uses of digital technologies pose grave hazards to human rights. For instance, it has been demonstrated that the operations of businesses like social media sites, search engines, and internet service providers negatively affect people's rights to privacy, freedom of expression, freedom of association, non-discrimination, and even the right to life.
