On May 13–14, 2025, the third in-person Technical Interface Meeting (TIM-3) between the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) was successfully held at ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru. During the upcoming Chandrayaan-5 / LUPEX mission, technical teams, project executives, and senior officials from ISRO, JAXA, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Japan, gathered to review progress and collaboration. As the fifth mission in India's Chandrayaan lunar program, Chandrayaan-5 will continue the legacy of Chandrayaan-1, Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and the upcoming Chandrayaan-4. The mission aims to explore lunar volatiles, including water ice, by targeting the moon's south pole region, particularly focusing on a Permanently Shadowed Region (PSR). It will carry an ISRO-developed lunar lander and will be launched using JAXA's H3-24L launch vehicle. The lander will also deploy a lunar rover developed by MHI, Japan.
ISRO is providing several research instruments for the mission in addition to the lander. There will also be instruments from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and JAXA that are all aimed at the in-situ study of lunar polar volatiles. A new chapter in international space collaboration and lunar science was opened on March 10, 2025, when the Indian government formally approved the Chandrayaan-5 / LUPEX mission with a budgetary authorization.
