How does AI make a difference in the Indian healthcare system?

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming healthcare around the world by improving diagnosis, treatment and healthcare management. AI technologies could help close the gap for the 4.5 billion people globally who lack access to basic healthcare services by assisting physicians, automating medical analysis, and developing digital health solutions. Through advanced digital platforms, AI tools are already being used to interpret brain scans for stroke detection, detect bone fractures, predict diseases before symptoms appear and support clinical decision making. These innovations have the potential to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve patient outcomes worldwide. However, the healthcare industry still lags behind other sectors in adopting AI and requires proper training, regulation and responsible deployment to ensure safe and equitable healthcare innovation.

How can the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission ABDM be implemented with the aid of GenAI?

Sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and implemented by the National Health Authority, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission ABDM aims to establish a national digital health ecosystem that connects hospitals, healthcare providers and patients through interoperable digital platforms. Initially, the initiative was approved with a five-year budget of 1600 crore rupees to build national health registries and Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts ABHA along with other digital health infrastructure. ABDM was allocated approximately 350 crore rupees in the Union Budget 2026 to 2027, slightly higher than the 324 crore rupees allocated the previous year to support the expansion of digital health. According to recent updates, tens of millions of electronic health records and more than 70 to 80 crore ABHA health IDs have been created, enabling secure digital health data sharing across India's healthcare system.
